Home Depot Foundation Award

About The Home Depot Foundation

The Home Depot Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization that was established in 2002 to further the community building goals of The Home Depot by providing additional resources to assist non-profit organizations.
The Foundation is dedicated to building affordable homes for working families that are healthy to live in and affordable to own. To make homes healthy and affordable, the Foundation encourages developers to incorporate responsible design and use durable and quality materials to ensure that homes are more energy and water efficient,
have good indoor air quality, and provide a safe and healthy space to live. Since its formation, The Home Depot Foundation has granted $120 million to nonprofit organizations and supported the development of more than 65,000 affordable, healthy homes.

About the Award

The Home Depot Foundation’s national Award of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development is a highly competitive award that recognizes the achievements of a small city and a large city, and their nonprofit partner, for their commitment to creation of sustainable neighborhoods. The City of North Charleston was recognized for its commitment to neighborhood revitalization during the years following the Charleston Navy Base closure, and for its work in creating the Oak Terrace Preserve community. The Institute was recognized with a $75,000 grant for its work in educating residents about energy conservation and green building practices.

Green Village Vision

“We envision a re-invigorated area of the City:
Where people, live, work, and learn…
That is inclusive of all the community’s people…
Where the built environment embodies respect for Individuals, community, and the natural environment…
That understands its place in the fabric of the larger community, And celebrates its connections with other City areas and their shared culture and history…
That restores and enhances the environment while harnessing natural systems…
That values beauty, and provides opportunities for Sanctuary, spiritual renewal, and inspiration…
That is a great place to GROW!!
To grow families, to grow knowledge,
To grow skills and jobs, to grow plants and trees,
To grow friendships, to grow old…
That leads to improvement throughout the City.”
